Jessica Blair will be opening one of the first Black/women owned beauty supply store in Detroit. Jessica Blair’s journey to entrepreneurship took an unexpected turn. Despite graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Kinesiology, and working in the medical field, she found herself unfulfilled and lost her passion for the industry but never lost the passion to help people. It was then that she decided to take a chance and pursue entrepreneurship, rediscovering her passion and creating a new path for herself.

Jessica, who grew up in Detroit’s inner city, observed a lack of certain features while shopping for beauty goods with her mother. In a predominantly Black city, there was a paucity of Black-owned beauty supply businesses. Additionally, customer service was subpar, particularly for persons of color.

Jessica is a first generation Entrepreneur in her family to take this journey. Her educational background and experience working with the Board Of Education and State of Michigan provided her with the organizational and disciplinary skills necessary to succeed in the beauty supply industry, which she further developed through self-study and taking courses, both free and paid.

In 2020, JB Beauty supply opened online and sold products through various pop up events. Like many businesses, it faced disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, the owner took the opportunity to further her knowledge and enhance her skills to ensure the success of her first store located at 18724 Grand River Detroit, MI slated to open late Summer 2024.

Jessica’s advice to others that want to break in this get out your comfort zone, pace yourself there will be times you wont make money , and most of all study your craft and seek out as many courses as you can you will be surprised how much free information you can get as well as invest in your education.
